Exploring Values on the Pitch

At Up & Under Sports, we recognise that sport is more than just physical skills.  Through the vehicle of sport we aim to integrate our company values of leadership, resilience, sportspersonship, respect, determination, passion and teamwork in to all of our lessons and clubs. Therefore, we wanted to create an effective resource to maximise participation in all physical activities for children of all ages and abilities. These have taken the form of a series of brilliant task cards for key stage 1 and key stage 2, which encourage pupils to look out for values such as sportspersonship and respect within the lesson.

The key stage 2 cards set out challenges for pupils to do during the lesson, asking them to identify when, how and why the value of the day is being used.  This enables them to then take on the role of a coach to help install this within a game situation or a dance performance.

For key stage 1, pupils have the opportunity to identify and focus on their chosen fellow classmates who are showing the value in an activity using a star scoring system, through this they are learning a new sporting value and showing their understanding

Pupils will reflect upon their findings giving praise and recognition to their peers for these attributes but also to identify where it is not happening. This enables them to then take on the role of a coach to help install this within a game situation or a dance performance.

We are regularly asked to run competitions at our schools and we find this can bring out the best and worst in our pupils. With an emphasis on individual qualities such as determination and resilience, this creates a positive learning environment where everyone can achieve. Installing values within sport helps pupils to deal with the excitement of success and failure. Using our task cards celebrates positive social skills which children can use in all aspects of their lives.
